How to add spaces to the Mac Dock

The Dock has no dividers. One Terminal command adds a blank tile you can drag between your apps to split them into groups.

Add a space

  1. Open Terminal: press Command-Space, type Terminal and press Return.
  2. Paste this line and press Return:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

The Dock restarts, and a blank space appears after your apps. Drag it where you want a gap, just like an app icon. For another space, run the line again.

A smaller space

This adds a narrower gap, about half the width:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="small-spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

Remove a space

Drag the space out of the Dock until you see Remove, then let go. Nothing else changes.

Spaces or folders?

Spaces split the Dock into groups, but every app still takes its own spot, so the Dock stays just as long. To make it shorter, put each group into a folder instead. Step by step: how to make app folders in the Mac Dock.
